This book was fantastic. I couldn't stop reading it. I had different ideas as to what was actually going on but I was wrong each time. It definitely kept me guessing and worried about certain characters. I was also really glad that the author didn't try to include a bunch of romance into it because it wouldn't have made it realistic given the circumstances. But I didn't really like her. She lied, made countless excuses, and even more almost inexcusable mistakes. The book is also very disturbing in parts with its description of some the psychiatric episodes. It was an intriguing story but not the easiest of reads.
Without a background in Autism I can't speak to how accurate that part is, but I liked the 'suspense' of the book. I had to keep reading so I knew how she got him off. I didn't like how easy it seemed for her to get out of her ankle cuff, and break into Marianne's house, but the end had me so compelled to keep going.
Good book that I will definitely recommend.
Saving Max was an awesome story about a child in a Psych Hospital who was given drugs unknown to the family. The suspense was "no way" and what she did was unbelievable. You have got to read this if you like something different, full of suspense and outcomes you were guessing had to be right.
I got this book almost a month ago but had to finish another book and then with Christmas I have not had a lot of time.I am about a quarter through it and it is very good reading and so far has held my attention more each time I read a bit more.This is a book for everyone to sink there minds in and I can hardly wait to see how it ends.Highly recommended so far.
I found this book interesting enough to read through to the end. It was, however, poorly written and amateurish. The characters are not developed in any detail and are totally unbelievable. The way Danielle "solves" problems and digs for the truth piles one coincidence on another. All of the chapters are from her point of view until surprise, in chapter 25 we get the viewpoint of another character. And just that one time. The courtroom scenes are unrealistic, which is surprising considering the author is an attorney. I'm giving it three stars instead of two because despite its many flaws, it did hold my interest, although begrudgingly. The premise sounded good but the execution of the book fell shot.
The beginning was a little bit slow. I wasn't sure where the author was going. I also thought that it was a bit far-fetched that a boy with Asperger's was sent to a psychiatric hospital that had a guy named Dwyane use physical force on the patients regularly. The plot itself was pretty good, but what it was based on was rather weak. The whole murder was able to happen because nurses left kids unattended to go grab lunch. The author also uses a wide variety of awkward metaphors and vocabulary. The story really begins pick up after the murder.

Another part of the story that was really questionable was Marianne, and how she managed to do all that she did without ANYONE catching her. Well actually, there were many questions.
How does she just change her name and have no one notice? What is her real name anyway? How, specifically, did she blackmail the doctor? When Sevillas called Danielle to ask why she wasn't at court yet, why didn't she just say she found the diaries? How did Marianne just disappear in a court room full of reporters with a judge facing her?
This book did remind me a lot of Jodi Picoult's 'House Rules', only because it involved a situation where the author, in my opinion, took Asperger's a little too far by exaggerating every single symptom of the condition to the point where it might mislead readers. It is definitely a fiction novel, but some of the characters' actions seem crazily unrealistic. I also noticed the autistic 'symptoms' suddenly went away when max was cooperating with his mother, trying to get our of the hospital.
All the negative aspects aside, I thought that the book really had me hooked when Danielle broke into the house. I wanted to read more about this mysteriously dark person and what she was thinking. Author tied it up nicely at the end, gave me a lot to think about.
I found this book on the floor of my basement building. Picked it up and decided to read it a year later. I really enjoyed reading "Saving Max" despite of the poor opinions. It was a page-turner for me. The story is mystery and it doesn't have to be all realistic. Honestly, I even got teary-eyed in a few episodes. I'm a mother and I have a 13 yr old son and I will do anything in my power to "SAVE" him.
